It was a gloomy Sunday evening, the perfect day for a movie. So, my mom, boyfriend, and I set out for the White Bear Theater to see ‘Bridesmaids.’ My mom informed us that this movie had been referred to as "the female 'Hangover'." We discussed how curious we were to see if the positive reviews were correct as we headed up to the concessions counter. With snacks and drinks in hand, we made our way into the theater.
Although many other reviews had said the movie had been “mislabeled a chick-flick” or was “a chick-flick for men,” our first reaction as we climbed the stairs to our seats was Wow there are a lot of girls here. Nick pointed out that he only saw one other man in the theater. We all joked around about how we really were making Nick see a “chick-flick,” but there was nothing we could do at this point! We just scanned the theater for the prime location to sit, which was always middle, middle, for my family. Luckily, even in the crowded theater we nabbed some great seats near the middle. After getting settled in and commenting on some of the previews, we were ready to see ‘Bridesmaids’!
Without explaining the exact scene, let’s just say the beginning of the movie was a little unexpected and slightly awkward with the company I was in. Aside from the uncomfortable start to the movie, very hilarious scenes were to follow. Basically, the movie was about a woman (Kristen Wiig) who was going through some rough times in her life, but these trials were made quite laughable by the comedic genius Wiig. Also, as this woman was going through her romantic and financial ups and downs, her best friend since childhood was getting ready to get married and had chosen Wiig as the maid of honor. Personally, seeing this movie with neither your mother nor significant other probably would have made it quite a bit more enjoyable. However, I still enjoyed the humorous scenes made even better by the all-star cast which included two of SNL’s best actresses.
As I held the large bag of popcorn for my mom and Nick to eat from on either side of me, an absolutely unexpected scene began. Not nearly as inappropriate or uncomfortable as the first scene, this scene was simply disgusting. All three of us had to turn away in an attempt not to lose our lunch. This scene could have possibly what made it seem more like a “chick-flick for men,” but to be honest, I think it just made it slightly less enjoyable, for both men and women.
Altogether though, ‘Bridesmaids’ did a fantastic job producing laughs and chuckles throughout the theater. I am sure I would have had a different take on the movie if I had been with a group of girl friends, but since I was with my mom and boyfriend, I looked at it a little differently. The somewhat inappropriate or vulgar scenes seemed to come across as much more than they were. Although, my opinions were skewed, I think the movie was still a very successful comedy and I enjoyed quite a few hilarious scenes, and I will admit I laughed out loud many times.
